Gift Ideas: A Better Way to Decide What to Give
Most gift lists start in the wrong place. They start with a product and hope it lands on the right person. The useful question is the other way round: who is this person, what do they already have too much of, and what would quietly make a week of theirs better?
This page is the starting point for everything on The Gift Edit. Work through the thinking below, then jump to the guide that matches your situation — by relationship, by occasion, or by budget.
Find Their GiftStart with the person, not the category
Write down three things about them that have nothing to do with shopping: how they spend a free Sunday, what they complain about, and what they've replaced most recently. Those three answers rule out more bad gifts than any list can.
A person who complains about their commute and a person who complains about their kitchen need very different gifts, even if they're the same age, the same relationship to you, and the same budget.
Decide what the gift is meant to say
Every gift carries an intent, whether you plan it or not. It's worth choosing that intent deliberately before you look at a single product.
- Sentimental — you want them to feel remembered. Small and specific beats large and generic.
- Practical — you want to remove a daily annoyance. Buy the better version of something they already use.
- Fun — you want a reaction in the room. This works with friends and rarely with in-laws.
- Luxury — you want them to have something they wouldn't buy themselves. The restraint is the point; one good thing, not three fine ones.
Match the effort to the relationship
Gifts go wrong when the effort level and the relationship don't match. A deeply personal gift for a new colleague is uncomfortable. A gift card for a partner of ten years reads as a shrug.
As a rough guide: colleagues and acquaintances want something pleasant and non-intrusive; friends want something that shows you were paying attention; family and partners want something that could only have come from you.
When they say they don't want anything
Usually this means they don't want clutter, not that they don't want to be thought of. Two things work reliably here: consumables they'd never upgrade themselves — good coffee, good chocolate, a proper hand cream — and replacing something they use daily that has quietly worn out.
Set the budget before you browse, not after
Browsing first is how a ₹1,000 gift becomes a ₹4,000 one. Fix your number first, then find the best thing inside it. A well-chosen gift at ₹800 is remembered longer than a careless one at ₹5,000 — the recipient can almost always tell which decision you made.
Where to go next
Pick the guide closest to your situation. Each one is written for that specific person or moment rather than being the same list with a different heading.

How The Gift Edit narrows this down
We don't rank gifts by popularity. Every recommendation is scored against what you tell us about the person:
- Relationship — what's appropriate for a partner isn't appropriate for a colleague.
- Occasion — a birthday, an anniversary and a housewarming ask for different things.
- Personality and interests — the strongest signal we have, and the one generic lists ignore.
- Gift style and emotional intent — sentimental, practical, fun or understated luxury.
- Budget — treated as a hard limit, not a suggestion.
